BIOLOGY I HOMEWORK AND GRADING POLICY
MR. SALTER, 2011-2012
The textbook used in Biology I is Biology published by Glencoe. You should carry your textbook home with you and leave it at home throughout the semester. We have a class set of textbooks to use in class each day. If you are assigned to ISS during the semester, you need to bring your textbook from home in order to use it in ISS on those days. Other work will be assigned from other materials from time to time.
Also, I expect you to purchase a loose leaf ring binder (should be at least 1.5 inches) to keep notes and other work. In addition to the loose leaf binder, you are to always have pencils (No. 2), mechanical pencils are fine as long as they have # 2 lead, and a black or blue pen with you in class.
HOMEWORK - Homework in Biology I will consist of reading assignments each day, and written assignments from time to time. Written assignments will usually consist of the review questions from each section of the text, as well as other questions prepared by the teacher from time to time. All written assignments are due the next day unless otherwise stated. When homework is checked, a grade will be given based on the amount of work completed and/or the accuracy of the answers. After this homework is checked, it is expected that it will be kept in the loose leaf ring binder so that it may be used for review.
LABORATORY - Both individual and group laboratory work will be completed during the course. Students will turn in laboratory reports and/or answer questions from the lab exercise. Observation by the teacher will also be used as a form of measurement of laboratory skills. Some projects may be required during the course.
TESTS & QUIZZES - Major tests will be given after each chapter or after several related chapters. Quizzes, both announced, and "pop" quizzes, will be given from time to time to ensure understanding on smaller amounts of material.
It will not be unusual to have a quiz on material covered the day before as well as previous material covered.
GRADE CALCULATION - The following formula will be used to calculate grades for each quarter.
Major Tests = 60%
All other assignments
such as quizzes, class
work, homework,
and lab = 40%
Total = 100%
Grades are as follows:
93 - 100 = A
85 - 92 = B
77 – 84 = C
70 – 76 = D
0 - 69 = F
