ANATOMY SYLLABUS 2011-2012 Mr. David W. Salter, Teacher
Human Anatomy and Physiology is a course which presents a balanced understanding of the concepts of the human body along with discussions of diseases and dysfunctions contributed by a lack of homeostasis, or abnormal body functioning. The pathological conditions are explained to allow the students to understand the normal functional process. Students will acquire a background knowledge of the basic functioning of the human body, a skill that will be useful in a career in healthcare. There are no state standards for Anatomy and Physiology. Therefore, students will study the typical topics found in Anatomy and Physiology.
Unit 1 – Introduction – 6 days
Unit 2 – Cells and Tissues – 12 days
Unit 3 – Integumentary System – 7 days
Unit 4 – Skeletal and Muscular Systems – 12 Days
Unit 5 – Nervous System and Sense Organs – 8 days
Unit 6 – Endocrine System – 5 days
Unit 7 – Blood and the Circulatory system – 9 days
Unit 8 – Respiratory System – 5 days
Unit 9 – Digestive System – 6 days
Unit 10 – Urinary System – 5 days
Unit 11 – Rat Dissection – 5 days
The textbook used for Anatomy is: Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology, 7th Edition, Elaine N. Marieb, 2003.
Grades
Grades will be calculated as follows:
Major tests count 60% of the quarter grade. All other activities (class work, homework, labs, etc.) count 40% of the quarter grade. The final grade is calculated as follows: Quarter 1 = 40%, Quarter 2 = 40%, Semester Examination = 20%.
Missed work, quizzes, and tests
Make up work is the responsibility of the student.
A grade of 0 will be assigned for all missed work until it is made up.
Missed tests and quizzes due to absenteeism are expected to be made up upon return to class. The work must be made up within 3 days unless there are circumstances which prevent this.
Missing class the day before the test is not an excuse since ample warning of scheduled tests is given ahead of time. Major Tests are always announced.
Missed labs must usually be made up after school.
Class Proceedures
Take care of personal needs and locker visits between classes. No one may leave the room for any reason for the first 10 minutes nor the last 10 minutes of class.
Bring all necessary materials with you to class each day. (Notebooks, Pencils, Paper, etc.)
As soon as you enter the room, be seated and begin the Bell Ringer Activity.
Any homework should be made available for turn-in at this time as well.
Remember the tardy “sweep” policy. When the tardy bell sounds I will close the door. You will then must report to the office for a pass. The door will be closed, even if you are just outside the door. You must be fully in the room by the time the bell ring is complete. No running!!
Attendance will be taken within the first five minutes of class each day.
At the conclusion of class, the teacher will dismiss you. Do not jump up and start to leave when the bell rings!
Supplies
You will need a 3-ring binder of approximately 1.5”.
You will need No. 2 pencils and blue or black pens.
You will need notebook paper.
Dress
You must follow the school dress code in this class.
Appropriate dress for lab. OSHA Requirement
Closed shoes (no open toes, mesh slipper, or bedroom shoes). Keep an old pair of shoes in your school locker (not gym).
No loose, floppy sleeves.
Long hair should be tied back for lab.
Class Rules
Come to class prepared and on time.
Stand or talk only with permission. (Sometimes you will work in groups and move around the room for an activity.)
Follow all directions of the teacher.
Treat others with respect.
Obey all other school rules.
No food, drink, or gum allowed in the room!
